What we do

Waves Banner

The British Cello Society is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) composed of an executive and an advisory board and 3 hub leaders. We present an annual series of events to our members and the general public to fulfil our aims and our mission. Our remit is to educate, inspire and inform in all aspects of the art of
cello playing.

Charitable Object 1

To promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music and specifically in the art of playing the violoncello by the presentation of concerts, recitals, competitions, meetings, lectures, seminars and training courses and any other related activities.

Our Members

Members make our work possible by paying subscription fees, attending our events and spreading the word about us through social media channels.

Active members help us to grow. We count on you to spread the word, to volunteer on whatever you might have time for—from assistance at events to helping to support our charitable aims. Bring your students and friends to our events, and encourage them to take an active part in promoting the cello. We welcome your ideas, and we encourage you to work with us to help the British Cello Society thrive.

Charitable Object 2

To further the education and training of practitioners of the violoncello by the provision of grants and donations to individuals and educational establishments, education awards and scholarships, equipment and facilities (including musical instruments), and by the commissioning of new works of high quality for the violoncello.

What is the role of our governing board?

Our governing Board of Trustees is made up entirely of volunteers who devote countless hours to fulfilling our brief as a charity, ensuring that our events meet the expectations of our members and maintain the high standards for the public as well. We meet two to three times a year and also benefit from the contributions and ideas from our distinguished Advisory Board.

What is my subscription used for?

Your subscriptions, as well as generous donations from patrons, support the essential running costs of our Society, including the day-to-day administration, social media expenses, website maintenance and more. Sponsorship is essential to presenting our wide variety of events, and we are fortunate to enjoy faithful sponsors who believe in what we do. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact us. We would be delighted to work with you.

Membership benefits

Membership of the British Cello Society is open to all. Our youth division, called Cello Club, presents opportunities for beginning cellists through age 18 and contributes to the education of our young and eager community of cellists. We offer older students, teachers, performers and adult learners many ways to share and contribute to the challenges of learning and playing our instrument. As a charity, it is important that our standards are maintained in view of our commitment to the public benefit.
